His obituary in the NY Times this week describes Dr. John Gunderson’s life-long contributions to the study and understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder. Writer Benedict Carey describes his career arc during a time when few mental health providers accepted BPD as a treatable disorder. Dr. Gunderson’s writings, research and advocacy literally brought BPD out of the darkness and into the light when he spearheaded he effort to include BPD in the third edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III), the ‘bible’ of mental heath disorders. Anyone whose life has been touched by BPD as a patient, family member, friend or provide is better off as a result of his work.
